Vathy, Ithaca

Vathi or Ithaca is the capital of Ithaca and the seat of the regional unit of Ithaca. According to the 2011 census it has 1,920 inhabitants. It is located in the southern part of the island, at the bottom of a bay that forms a natural harbor. The islet of Lazaretto is also located in the bay.

The name “Vathi” is due to the fact that it is located at sea level and is surrounded by high mountains and hills, including the highest mountain of Ithaca, Niritos . Vathi is identified with the ancient port of Forkynos, where according to the Odyssey, the Phaeacians left the sleeping Odysseus.
